We took the Krilo catamaran from Korcula to Split and as before it was a nice relaxing ride on the boat. Split is a bustling sea side city. Its port is always busy and its seaside promenade is as good as any Mediterranean Rivera.
Split’s star attraction is the Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a unique combination of the past and present coexisting with such harmony. Diocletian built it as his humble retirement home and today the palace is also the old city of Split and inside are restaurants and shops and churches. The palace is the old city and it wears its past oh so nonchalantly that one forgets that it is actually one of the world’s best preserved and most impressive Roman monuments.
We had rented a 2 bedroom apartment (Garden apartment using agoda) in Split and we walked on the promenade all the way to one end and followed directions to find the place. Again a little uphill climb and some stairs but a comfortable 1 night stay. It was walking distance to the palace and right where we wanted to be, near the old city/palace and off the promenade.
In the evening, it was fun roaming the old town and the promenade. Dinner was at Restaurant Central in the palace area. There was also a traditional dance performance in the main square which was quite entertaining. It was Corpus Christi and at the Split Cathedral we saw a special mass & Ceremony.
We signed up for a 2 hour walking tour of Split using splitwalkingtour with the blue umbrella for next day morning. The tour started at the North entrance or the Golden gate to the Diocletian’s Palace by the statue Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović. Our guide was Ina, an architect and she did a wonderful job explaining everything, sharing the history of the place. We were glad we took the tour and learned about Split’s history. It was a warm day in Split and the heat made us tired. We had arranged for our car transfer to Plitvice at 2 pm so after the walking tour, rushed back to check out and keep our luggage in storage while we went for lunch. Just a short stay in Split but we were glad to have visited this bustling and busy city where the past and present are blended well.
